This Saturday, learners, parents as well as teaching, educational, administrative and technical personnel of the International School Mondorf-les-Bains met at the Hall Roll Delles in the centre of Mondorf to work together on the development of the EIMLB charter.

After being introduced by the principal, all members of the school community first worked individually to imagine their ideal school. The productions were then grouped together and used as a basis for the next workshop. In mixed groups of six, learners, parents and staff, the participants then went into the details of their respective visions of the ideal school and shared them to deduce the key elements.

By the end of the morning, work had definitely not been completed yet. The EIMLB School Development Unit will examine the ideas and proposals collected. It will document it’s course of actions and establish a first draft of the charter that will be discussed again with all members of the school community. The final version will be submitted for approval to the School's Education Council, where the delegates of the various representative bodies meet.

The warm atmosphere and promising results of the morning confirm the leadership of the EIMLB in its efforts to involve all members of the community in school development issues. The aim is not only to have the community benefit from everyone’s ideas and experience; it is above all to develop and implement a common vision that is accepted and supported by the largest possible number of our school community.

Run Nathan, run!

This Sunday morning, Nathan was at the start of the LASEL Run in Walferdange, representing the EIMLB. Accompanied by his sports teacher, he got his starting number and went on the running track at 8:40.

Two weeks ago Nathan had the idea to participate in the LASEL race on his own initiative. Although not a runner before, he was very well supported and motivated to implement his plan, and so it was a great experience for him to represent the school athletically. The entire school community wishes to congratulate him for finishing 428th out of 823 participants (273th in the boys' group and 75th in his class of age). But more important than the sporting result was the motivation Nathan fought for every centimeter and place to represent the jersey of his school, EIMLB, worthily.

(https://seveluxembourg.org/)

EIMLB to adopt KiVa antibullying program

EIMLB is taking a further step into becoming a grown-up school community by starting the training of its carers in the renowned KiVa antibullying program that is implemented by a number of European Schools throughout the continent.

EIMLB teachers and personnel are strongly committed to prevent any kind of bullying from the very early age on. The specific KiVa curriculum thus already starts in Primary school and aims at letting children evolve in community that builds on mutual respect and compassion while promoting lasting relationships based on trust and Responsibility.

First units of the KiVa curriculum will be implemented at EIMLB as of September 2019.

Abstract from the description of the KIVA program

For more detailed information, please refer to www.kivaprogram.net

KiVa is an innovative school-based antibullying program which has been developed using cutting-edge research on bullying and its mechanisms

Prevention, intervention, and monitoring

KiVa is an evidence-based program to prevent bullying and to tackle the cases of bullying effectively. The former is crucial but also the latter is important, as no prevention efforts will make bullying disappear once and for all; there need to be tools to be utilized when a case of bullying comes to light. The third aspect of KiVa is constant monitoring of the situation in one’s school and the changes taking place over time; this is enabled by the online tools included in KiVa. These tools produce annual feedback for each school about their implementation of the program as well as the outcomes obtained.

The main components of KiVa

KiVa includes both universal and indicated actions. The universal actions, such as the KiVa curriculum (student lessons and online games), are directed at all students and focus mainly on preventing bullying. The indicated actions are to be used when a bullying case has emerged. They are targeted specifically to the children and adolescents who have been involved in bullying as perpetrators or victims, as well as to several classmates who are challenged to support the victim; the aim is to put an end to bullying.

KiVa is based on decades of research on bullying and its mechanisms

KiVa was developed at the University of Turku in Finland, with funding from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Its developers are experts who have been studying the phenomenon of bullying and its mechanisms for decades. The team is led by PhD, Professor Christina Salmivalli and PhD, Special Researcher Elisa Poskiparta.

Strong evidence of effectiveness

There are numerous antibullying programs on the market but unfortunately, only few of them have been tested in rigorous scientific studies. This means that there is no evidence of whether or not the programs actually help in reducing bullying in schools.

The effects of the KiVa antibullying program have been evaluated in numerous studies. In addition to the studies based on the data collected and analyzed by our KiVa research group, also independent data collected by National Institute for Health and Welfare indicates that bullying and victimization have decreased in Finland since the broad rollout of the KiVa program. KiVa is now being evaluated in several countries: the first international studies from the Netherlands, Estonia, Italy, and Wales are emerging, showing that KiVa is effective outside of Finland as well.

KiVa is targeted at various age groups

KiVa has three units. Unit 1 is designed for children of 6–9 years of age. Unit 2 is suitable for children of 10–12 years of age. Unit 3 is meant to be used after the middle school/lower secondary school transition, for students of around 13–16 years of age.

Material for teachers, students and parents

KiVa includes an extensive amount of material for teachers, students and parents including e.g. teachers’ manuals, videos, online games, KiVa student and staff surveys, posters, vests and parent’s guide. KiVa has several language versions available and more translations are underway.

KiVa is not meant to be a one-year project, but a permanent part of the school’s antibullying work.

EIMLB visits Sotogrande International School

On Thursday, January 31st, delegates of the EIMLB visited Sotogrande International School to have a closer look at how they work with students and how they use technology in learning. Our delegates were pleased to see to what extend the pedagogical settings are used to let students learn and anchor their learning in practice.

Finally, the way all social events in school and during all kinds of outings - basically in relation with some outstanding extracurricular activities - are linked via service learning to the school's non-benefit social association gave us even some more splendid ideas to develop the EIMLB.

Mondorf-les-Bains Christmas Market

On December 5th, Saint Nicolas came to visit the the P1s and S1s at the EIMLB and gave out some Boxemännecher to everybody.

EIMLB goes Halloween

Ghosts and goblins are about. Witches walk among us. Princes, princesses, fairies and knights fill schools and classrooms. Is there any doubt that Halloween is here?

Starting shot for the national cycling stadium

Construction of the national cycling stadium to beginn in 2020
Last year in November, Sports Minister Romain Schneider announced that a new cyclcing stadium should be built in Mondorf. This Friday, local authorities presented the project, which had emerged as winner in the contest of four architectural bureaus.
The cycling stadium will host international competitions as well as everyday sports activities of the Mondorf international school (École international Mondorf-les-Bains).

Première rentrée à l'EIMLB

Starting shot for a new school

This start of term for the first time sees students flock to the small but neatpremises of the International School in Mondorf-les-Bains. Over the next months and years, they will learn mathematics, human and natural sciences in their native language, Luxembourgish as an integration language and three other languages in three different language sections, German, French and English. The school's educational concept including Dalton-Plan and team-groups will promote their personal development and encourage them to take responsibility and initiative at school as well as in the society. We wish the future of tomorrow good luck.

Inauguration officielle de l'EIMLB

This year's school start also sees the launch of a new English-language public international school in Luxembourg.

This Saturday morning, the building for the state-run international public school in Mondorf-les-Bains was inaugurated by education minister Claude Meisch, who was joined by mayor Lex Delles and the school's new principal, Camille Weyrich.

75 students have enrolled at the government-funded international public school, which charges no tuition fees and which will be able to take in around 1,500 students down the line.

The school will follow a European school curriculum, and currently has English, French, and German sections. There are two first-year primary school classes and three first-year secondary school classes.
